Joel Matip to leave Liverpool after eight years

Cameroonian central defender, Joel Matip, will leave Liverpool by the end of the season, the club has announced.

He has been thanked for the memories he created with the team, from the time he joined from Schalke in 2016 on a free transfer.

Matip had 201 appearances, scoring 11 goals and 6 assists through the eight seasons he spent at the club. He won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Community Shield.

Jurgen Klopp who will also be leaving the club, said “whoever gets him is a lucky club. World-class and super humble”. Klopp had announced he would be stepping down at the end of the season after serving as coach for eight and a half years.

Joel Matip will bid farewell to fans over the weekend “I was allowed to be part of an exciting history with a great coach and an astonishing team in an extraordinary club. We have achieved great titles and have the best fans in the world” he said.

The defender 32, leaves alongside Thiago Alcantara, who will also bid farewell to the Reds.
