The Hisbah, Islamic police in Kano, Nigeria, have apprehended 11 individuals for violating the fasting rules during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to Hisbah spokesman, Lawal Fagge, the arrests were made after reports from vigilant citizens alerted authorities to individuals consuming food in public spaces, Sahara Reporters stated.
The said report indicates that among those apprehended was a female Muslim groundnut seller who was reportedly seen eating from her tray. The remaining ten individuals, all men, were caught across the city, particularly close to markets.
Speaking to BBC, Fagge emphasized that the Hisbah would continue their search operations to ensure compliance with Ramadan fasting regulations. However, he clarified that non-Muslims are exempt from these restrictions.
During Ramadan, observant Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, engaging in sexual activity, and smoking from dawn until sunset, as prescribed by the teachings of the Holy Quran.
