Inter-Communal Conflict In Tonga: SDO Strikes Peace Deal

On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at least four people died in a violent confrontation between the Anglophone community and the natives of Tonga in the Nde division, West region.

The clashes led to the vandalization of the gendarmerie brigade, the Brigade commander and the Senior Divisional Officer who came to solve the problem were brutalized.

The conflict started on Sunday 5 between an Anglophone settler and an indigene in Bitchoua neighbourhood resulting in the death of the indigene. Informed of the incident, an irate indigenous population stormed the premises of the Gendarmerie unit of the locality, rendering mob justice to the presumed killer of their brother and setting the post ablaze.

Days after the incident, the SDO of Nde, Ernest Ewango Budu held a crisis meeting on Friday, September 10, 2021, to put an end to the violence and communal antagonism.

During the meeting, Mayor Dieudonné Bankoue gave a genesis of the problem that led to the killing of Eric Yoteu.
The SDO condemned the act called on both parties to respect the laws governing the society.

The SDO said those involved will face justice.
