Instant porridge removed from shops in South Africa as children die after consumption

The news hit Mdantsane, Eastern Capeearly, Sunday, after the death of three children under unclear circumstances. The kids are said to have eaten Top Score instant maize porridge, South African media reported.

The Namibian manufacturer, Namib Mills, sent a message to sympathise with the family but said it would not take responsibility yet.

A senior brand manager said, “The loss of life, especially of young children, is a tragedy, and our deepest condolences go out to the families and communities affected. While there is currently no evidence linking our product to this unfortunate event, we are taking the matter very seriously.” 

Marne Bouwer noted that “This is a proactive measure, reflecting our commitment to consumer safety. We are co-operating fully with all relevant authorities and have also initiated our own internal investigation to ensure complete transparency.”

Meanwhile, shops have removed the product from their shelves and lists.
