How Tawamba’s Qatar World Cup “snub” affected his career

By Joe-Pavel Nyuysuliy – Sports editor

The non-selection of Leandre Tawamba for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, dealt a blow to the forward’s career, he has disclosed.

The 34-year-old Cameroonian striker said his dream from childhood was to represent the national team at a major tournament and that he saw the 2022 FIFA World Cup as his last chance.

Leandre disclosed via Vision 4, that at the time he underwent his youth training, he set a target to participate in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but did not succeed. He had to wait; Then 2022 came.

“I told myself that it was a chance for me to achieve my dream…For me, that was one of the last opportunities” he said.

“When I missed that opportunity, my career took a blow, because I had always played with that objective to participate in a World Cup or in a major competition. So for me, it was a dream shattered.

“It really hurt me.” Tawamba’s age leaves him with little or no hope to feature for the Lions at the World Cup again.

His first selection for the national team came in 2018, at the age of 28. He represented Cameroon in a number competitive matches and friendlies, and was part of the squad that qualified the Indomitable Lions for the World Cup in Qatar.

He did not say what reasons were given for his non-selection for the World Cup, but highlighted the fact that it shattered his dreams.

The former Al-Okhdood attacker said big stages like the World Cup give players the opportunity to show their potential and attract big clubs in Europe. He said the federation needs to take it into consideration, especially for young players, when making lists.

Tawamba is currently without a club. His one-year contract with Al-Okhdood ended, with five goals scored and four assists in 29 matches. He said he has offers from other Saudi Pro League clubs, but is still weighing the options.

The player is currently in Cameroon for a break. He has said he still has several years before he retires from professional football. Tawamba has played in South Africa, Lybia, Serbia, Kazakhstan, and Slovakia.
