High-speed train kills five maintenance workers in northern Italy accident

A speeding train has killed 5 maintenance workers and injured two others on railway tracks in the Turin area of Northern Italy.

 Local media, AGI news agency reported that the train was travelling 160 kilometers (99 miles) per hour when it hit the team who were said to be replacing parts of the track near Brandizzo, on the outskirts of Turin.

The accident occurred in the night of Wednesday August 30, 2023 breaking Thursday.

The workers were said to have been dragged for several meters before the train came to a halt.

The Mayor of Brandizzo, Paolo Bodoni told local media that: “It’s a huge tragedy, it cannot be excluded that there could have been a communication error.”

According to media reports, the company which manages Italy’s rail network, RFI, offered “its deep sorrow” for what happed and extended his condolences to the deceased workers families.
