A pregnant Nigerian woman has been arrested after staging her own kidnap which saw her husband paying the sum of 2 Million Naira (the equivalent of FCFA 850,000) for her release.

According to Nigeria’s Vanguard news website, quoting police officials, Rosemary Ubah, left home to the hospital for a scan at 7:40PM but never returned home. Her husband Chiedozie Ubah later got a call from an alleged kidnapper who demanded the sum of 2M Naira before his wife could be released.

The husband paid the money and then reported the incident to the police whose investigations found that the pregnant wife had connived with her boyfriend to stage the act on the unsuspecting husband.

When arrested, the wife’s boyfriend named Walter Ezeala, confessed that the pregnant wife had given him his own share of 800,000 Naira (about FCFA 340,000) and had kept 1.2 Million Naira (FCFA 510,000) for herself.

The two will be charged soon according to police.

Kidnapping for ransom has become a large ‘business’ in Nigeria and there are many reported incidents across the country and cases of family members lying to loved ones to extort money from them are not uncommon.
