Ghana central bank bans use of money bouquets as gifts

The Central bank of Ghana has warned the public to stop using cedi banknotes as decorations in bouquets when offering gifts.

According to the Director of the Currency Department at the central bank, Dominic Owusu, the cedi currency was issued to be used as a medium of exchange for the purchase of goods and services and not for other purposes.

He was speaking to journalists on how to preserve the currency on March 31st, 2023.

He stated that any other use of the currency is illegal and subject to prosecution, Ghana’s local media graphic online reported.

“We have noticed that some people were using the cedi notes as bouquets and hampers as gifts during weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations, this practice must stop,” he explained.

He also highlighted that using currency notes not only violates the law but also increases the likelihood of spoiling or damaging them and this adversely affects the operations of the Central Bank.

The Central Bank urges the public to cooperate and take responsibility to ensure the longevity of currency notes in circulation.

This ban comes after the Central Bank of Nigeria passed the same warning.
