GCPEA says Cameroon is one of the worst countries for studies due to insecurity

The Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack with French acronym GCPEA has in its latest report published on June 1, 2022 projected Cameroon as one of the countries where attacks on schools and even universities have increased in the world over the past two years.

The report titled “Education Under Attack” says data was gathered between 2020 and 2021 and the rate of these attacks, many of which are carried out by unidentified armed groups, significantly increased from December 2020.

Cameroon, Somalia, Palestine, and Colombia also saw a high number of attacks with students and teachers threatened, abducted, tortured, injured or even killed. It adds that if Cameroon is counted in the first rank, it is due to the very disturbing security situation in the North West and South West regions with the Fiango – Kumba school massacre of October 2020 still fresh in memories. Also, the burning of the Molyko, Buea Primary school and the Queen of Rosary Catholic College in the South West region on February 8 and February 11 respectively did not make things any better.

According to GCPEA, 9.000 pupils, students and teachers have been injured or killed in the course of the armed conflict in the English speaking regions of Cameroon. Last February, the UN estimated that 700,000 people including students and pupils were deprived of their right to education in both regions.

The Global Coalition to Protect Education aims at curbing and why not completely stopping attacks in schools all over the world.
