Fuel price increases in Togo. Is Cameroon next?

The Togolese minister of mines and energy, Mawunyo Mila has signed a communique this July 19th informing the population of his country about an increase in the prices of fuel, gasoil and petrol. This price hike, they explain, is as a result of the fluctuation in the prices of the petroleum products on the world market.

This increase started being felt after Russia declared war on Ukraine a few months back. Several countries have experienced severe scarcity of the products.

In Cameroon, severe scarcity was noticed on July 11th 2022 with the cities of Ebolowa and Yaounde running out of the products. Various stations were jammed with users who could not understand why they did not have petroleum products availabel. A communique from government tried to reassure the population but since then, the scarcity is still being felt.

For the past days, several newspaper outlets have hinted that a price increase is on the table and will soon be made public by authorities. With Togo going first on this increase path, speculations are high that Cameroon is next.
