IKILIWINDI MILE 12 DIONGO, Cameroon (CNA) — Four people have died after consuming poisonous food in Ikiliwindi Mile 12 Diongo in Konye Subdivision, Meme Division, officials said on Wednesday.
The victims, identified as Fon Francis, Neba Endurance, Fon Light, and an unidentified person, fell ill after eating the food on Monday, June 3. Eyewitnesses reported that the four had been consuming the same meal for the past two days.
A family member recounted that the mother served the food to the father and their three children, the youngest being just 2 years old.
“I smelled the food, and it stank like rotten eggs. I immediately washed my hands because I was about to eat the same food,” the young survivor said.
According to the source, three of the victims were rushed to Ntam Hospital in Mambanda, Kumba, after they began vomiting. Two were pronounced dead upon arrival, and the third died despite attempts to save her. Fon Francis, the father, succumbed later.
The doctor on duty confirmed that the victims had consumed a poisonous substance locally known as Mocab after a thorough medical examination.
This incident marked the second time in less than three years that Mocab poisoning has occurred in the locality. In June 2021, three people died after consuming food contaminated with the same substance.
