For promoting hate speech: Four media organs, journalists suspended by National Communication Council
Some media organs and journalists have been suspended by the National Communication Council, NCC for 1-3 months for directly or indirectly promoting hate speech during their programs.
The sanctions were slammed by the president of the National Communication Council, Joseph Chebongkeng during the council’s 38th ordinary session on June 2, 2023, in Yaounde.
The Voice radio station was suspended for a month for broadcast of alleged unsubstantiated and offensive comments likely to discredit persons during a program “ la republic armarge” on the 9, and 22, of May 2023.
The council also suspended the activities of Bruno Bidjang of Vision 4 television for one month for the failure of leadership and professional conduct on April 16, 2023.
The station Manager of Info tv was issued a warning letter while journalist Parfait Ayissi was suspended for a month for stigmatizing comments made by a panelist against an ethnic group.
“Following the stigmatizing comments made by a panelist against an ethnic group on the program “ Espace miné“ anchored by parfait Ayissi on the 25, April 2023 the council has decided to first issue a warning letter to the Station Manager of Info Tv and to suspend for 1 month Parfait Ayissi journalist with the said media organ” the NCC president stated.
However, the publisher of the weekly newspaper “100SurHebdo”, Stanislas Désiré_Tchoua was given a three-month suspension for publishing obscene images.
It is noted that, this is not the first time such sanctions are melted on media organs and practitioners by the NCC. The latest was the Equinoxe TV director Sévérin Tchounkeu and presenter Cédric Noufele of the program “ Droit de Response” who were suspended for a month for “failing to manage a guest whose comments were liable to amplify a potentially explosive social demand,” on April 1, 2022.
