Food insecurity looms in Northern part of Cameroon

Authorities say during the week of August 1- August 10 2022, armyworms have entered Cameroon’s northern regions and could greatly impact food availability.

Going by the National Observatory on Climate Change, there is a high risk of maize destruction from these worms which feed on leaves and stems of rice, maize, sugarcane and sorghum among others.

The worms attack maize and other crops making it difficult for farmers to have good yield

Adding to the fear of armyworm attacks, extreme hot temperatures ranging from 30° to 35° C have been announced in the North and Far North regions. In a recent publication, the ministry of agriculture and rural development revealed that the Northern regions of Cameroon already suffered food insecurity in 2021 due to extreme heat and the influx of the population caused by the arrival of refugees from neighbouring Nigeria and Chad.
