Festive season: government reassures on availability of foodstuff in markets

The increase in prices of basic commodities had become a nightmare for many Cameroonians across the country for the past months. Essential commodities such as cooking oil, tomatoes, rice and others had skyrocketed making it almost impossible for Cameroonians on average income to afford these. With the festive season approaching, the worry has been if the prices will get worse during this end of year period as has been the case over the past years.

The minister of trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, has assured Cameroonians that during this festive period, there willl be no shortages in the markets. He said this while visiting some markets in Yaounde on November 25th:

“I would like to be clear: we are going to eat at Christmas, we are going to eat for the new year. Tables will be plentiful. What is certain is that the resource exists. The product is there. There is plenty of rice, chicken is measured at 45 days and we are not yet at the 45 days before Christmas. Products will be available. Objectively, does our market suffer from a proven shortage? The answer is obvious: there is no specific shortage in our markets.” he declared.

The population hopes that this not one more empty promise and that December will be a month of abundance on the markets as promised by the trade minister.
