FECAFOOT crisis meeting: results not expectations of many fans

By Nukapuh P.

On Thursday March 30, 2023, the Federation of Cameroon Football, FECAFOOT, held an urgent crisis meeting in Yaounde with coaches of the national teams.

The meeting which was aimed at reviewing the road covered so far and to seek solutions for the recent poor results produced by the teams was chaired by FECAFOOT President, Samuel Eto’o.

Many Cameroonian football fans were totally mad at the national team, when they lost 2-1 to Namibia on March 28 during their away leg AFCON qualifier match in South Africa, after another 1-1 draw in Yaounde.

Immediately after the match, many fans took to social media platforms and criticized coach Rigobert Song. Some said he is incompetent and should be fired if the federation want the national team to progress.

When the president of FECAFOOT announced a crisis meeting on Thursday, many fans saw it as a timely intervention to send coach Rigobert Song away. Some were anxiously waiting for the outcome of the meeting to favor them, but that was not the case.

After the meeting, the deputy technical director of football, Engelbert Mbarga told the state media that the meeting was to evaluate the distance covered so far.

“It was to see what is still to be done, what is not working and how to ameliorate the performances of the different categories of the national teams. It was also to put a platform to collaborate between the coaches and the national technical directorate,” Engelbert Mbarga said.

To note that on same March 28, the national U23 Lions were defeated 6-7 on penalties and lost their qualification ticket for AFCON 2023 in Morocco.

Since the appointment of Rigobert Song as head coach of the national football team of Cameroon, he has won just 3 out of 12 matches.

While CAF has already announced February 13 as the official date to start the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, 5 time-champions, Cameroon will have to decide if they will be part of the competition or not when they meet Burundi in their last qualifier match.
