Far North: At least 10 persons die, 118 Cholera cases recorded

By Nde Linda

The information was disclosed during an emergency meeting chaired by the Governor of the Far North region, Midjiwawa Bakari on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

Public health officials are reporting an overwhelming number of cholera cases, especially at the Cameroon and Nigeria border in this region. The resurgence of the epidemic is owing to poor sanitation, limited access to potable water, and poor hygiene conditions in many households and communities.

According to the Governor, “ 118 cases have been detected in the region, 10 persons dead, important measures have been put in place to sensitize the population and stakeholders,”.

He says the population should practice good hygiene conditions by making use of the water kits provided by some organizations in washing their hands regularly and by doing so, they will be able to stop the killer disease from further spreading.

The floods currently affecting the region are likely to aggravate the situation on the ground.

According to reports from the Ministry of Health in September, 243 deaths and 11,993 cases were recorded for cholera in the country. The most affected regions were the Far North, Southwest, coastal, and West regions.
