Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg to lay off 10,000 employees

Tech company Meta, has announced 10,000 redundancies, as part of its ‘Year of Efficiency’ programme.

Zuckerberg in a statement on Tuesday, March 14, said the decision is meant “to improve organizational efficiency, dramatically increase developer productivity and tooling, optimize distributed work, garbage collect unnecessary processes, and more” he highlighted.

The restructuring will also see 5,000 unfulfilled job adverts closed, the company head said.

“A leaner org will execute its highest priorities faster. People will be more productive, and their work will be more fun and fulfilling” Zuckerberg highlighted.

“We will become an even greater magnet for the most talented people. That’s why in our year of efficiency, we are focused on cancelling projects that are duplicative or lower priority and making every organization as lean as possible” he added.

At its peak in 2022, Meta had grown to 87,000 employees globally, with a substantial portion of that hiring occuring since the onset of the Covid pandemic.

The cuts come less than six months after the company announced another wave of 11,000 layoffs.
