Bello Bouba Maïgari Reiterates Bids for Presidency, Mulls Resignation from Gov’t

Bello Bouba Maïgari, President of the National Union for Democracy and Progress (NUDP), said he has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2025 presidential election in Cameroon. In an exclusive interview with Jeune Afrique, Maïgari revealed that he may resign from his government position to focus on his campaign.

“For me to lead an effective campaign, I’ll need to dedicate myself fully,” Maïgari said, hinting at a potential resignation. He emphasized that any resignation would be formalized through an official letter to President Paul Biya, who has the authority to appoint and dismiss government members.

Maïgari’s decision to run for president marks a notable shift in Cameroon’s political landscape. The UNDP/NUDP leader expressed openness to forming a coalition with other opposition forces, stating, “The UNDP is open to all forces for change for a coalition”.

When asked about the current political climate, Maïgari described it as “generally calm,” while acknowledging security challenges in some regions. He also emphasized the importance of a peaceful transition and civic education to preserve peace during elections.

As Maïgari embarks on his presidential bid, his words will be closely watched by political observers and Cameroonians alike. His northern brother, Employment Minister, Issa Tchiroma Bakary had already resigned and declared his intention to run for presidency.
