EU issues F CFA2.771 billion to curb food insecurity in NW/SW regions
1,051,000 people suffered from severe food insecurity in Cameroon between October and December 2022 as compared to 2,022,978 people between June and August 2022. These figures were revealed after studies carried out during the second “Harmonised Framework for the Identification of Risk Areas and Food / Nutritionally Insecure Populations“ which was presented by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe.
The European Union, a World Food Program partner has released the sum of 4.225 million Euros (F CFA 2.771 billion) to curb food insecurity in the North West and South West regions.
This contribution made through the EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Department aims at strengthening the response of the World Food Programme “to the emergency food needs of 598,000 people and host communities”.
Gabriel Mbairobe also mentioned that these two regions (with 7 divisions severely affected), together with the Far North, account for more than 60% of the population in a situation of acute food insecurity between October and December 2022.
According to the WFP Representative and Country Director, Wanja Kaaria, these figures could rise again if nothing is done, given the worsening inflation due to the Russio-Ukrainian crisis:
“WFP needs to increase its support to the increased food needs in these regions where 1.1 million people are food insecure”.
Reports from the WFP reveal that food insecurity in these regions has been worsened by the six-year-old conflict which has triggered a serious humanitarian crisis, with over 580,000 internally displaced persons.
The deteriorating security situation has continued to affect the food security of households, especially the displaced populations and farming households who are already extremely vulnerable due to the disruption of their livelihood activities.
