“The use of Ghana Must Go as a means of packing baggage has cost the airlines huge loss and also damaging the conveyor belt system, not only on our flight but also on other foreign airlines, hence the prohibition.”

The popular “Ghana must go” bag has been banned as luggage carriers for international travels via the Ethiopian Airlines company.

The news broke out in a circular by the Airline’s Regional Manager of Airport Services, at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Henok Gizachew, signed on 24 November 2023.

Traders and travelers prefer the “Ghana must go” bag because of its light weightness and affordability.

According to airport authorities, the decision would reduce the risk of baggage mishandling at check-in counters.

Nevertheless, if you must use these bags, “they must be well-packed in cartons of a hardcover of rectangular size.”

The bags were banned in 2017 by Air France, and a similar decision was taken in Dubai in 2017 labeling such bags as “non-compliant” baggage.

“The Ghana Must Go bags” came to prominence in Nigeria in 1980 when illegal immigrants were asked to leave the country and the majority who came from Ghana, fled with these “checked blue and red bags” on their backs.
