Eseka: 13 shops ravaged by fire in main market

At least 13 shops are reported to have been burnt to ashes due to a fire outbreak that occurred at the Eseka main market in the Nyong and Kelle division of the centre region.

The traders say the fire sparked up following an explosion of a gas bottle in a restaurant and they have incurred enormous damages and material losses as a result of it.
“We are in pain I can’t really tell how much we have lost but know that the material loss is enormous. We just saw our lifetime savings being destroyed,” a victim lamented.

Visiting the site, the Mayor of Eseka, Sylvian Moise Tjock, and Member of Parliament for the Nyong and Nkelle division Cabral Libii says measures are currently being taken to remedy the situation.

According to the Mayor, the fire was stopped from spreading due to the support from his services and armed forces who came to the ground to try to put out the fire.

“I have proposed to council authorities to relocate the victims to unoccupied stores. Due to the fire, the high tension was affected causing us to be in the dark. I have informed ENEO authorities and they are currently on the site to see how they can install electricity,” Mp Cabral Libii explained.

He adds that he will explore state and solidarity mechanisms to support the economic operators and rebuild the market.

The victims however hope they receive the government aid which has been promised to them so they can get back on their feet.
The actual cause of the fire is still unknown.
