#Endbadgovernance: Tinubu calls for dialogue, suspension of protests
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu offered to dialogue with protesters on Sunday, August 4, 2024, urging them to suspend the #endbadgovernance protests against the rising cost of living.
He condemned violence and looting in the ongoing protests in a televised address, adding that those looting and carrying out violence have a political agenda.
The wanton looting of supermarkets and shops is contrary to what organizers promised it would be peaceful.
He sent condolences to the families of those who have died.
“Under these circumstances, I hereby join the protesters and the organizers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue,” Tinubu said.
President Tinubu started his speech by listing things his regime has done in his first year in power, saying that they have embarked on major infrastructure projects that will lead to economic prosperity including roads, bridges, and railways like the Sokoto-Calabar highway among others.
The oil and gas industry is expressing reemergence after the increase of oil products to 1.61 million barrels per day.
“Investors are coming back,” he said.
Right groups and reports say over 10 people have been killed in the protests as Nigerians grapple with the high cost of living that started in 2023 when President Tinubu ended fuel subsidies.
