Elections aftermath:Controversy erupts over Bishop’s political stance

A pronouncement by Archbishop Andrew Nkea, President of the National Episcopal Conference, relating to the October 12, 2025, Presidential Elections has become the centre of heated debates.
Nkea was speaking in Kumba on January 6 during the solemn opening of the 49th Annual Seminar of the Bishops of Cameroon. He opined that Cameroonians had to take their political responsibility and leave the prelates to preach.
Several reactions have since been posted on social media by observers, clergy and the laity. One of such, by Rev. Father Muma was shared with CNA. The catholic priest who resides in Michigan found the outing of the Archbishop to be unprecedented.
He argued, citing the Pontiff, Francis, who recently called out the United States for oppressing minorities. Muma further referenced his Local Ordinary, who had not only denounced killings in Gaza but invited the affected Bishop to carry out a fundraiser in his Archdiocese.
“I wonder if Archbishop Andrew Nkea truly believes that Cameroonians have the freedom to practice their civic responsibilities that contradict the outcome of those in the Cameroon upper echelon?” The Reverend Father questioned.
He went on to assert that the people of Cameroon had been suppressed and the church could rise up to the occasion with moral truth.
Incumbent Paul Biya, who is a practising Catholic, had a highly contested victory in the 2025 Presidential Elections, which were marred by reported irregularities. He was sworn in for an eighth time on November 6, 2025.
