ECOWAS to hold 2nd extraordinary summit on Niger

The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is set to hold a second extraordinary summit on the situation in Niger, the bloc confirmed on its Facebook page.

The current president of ECOWAS, Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu, has called for another summit, on August 10, 2023, 11 days after the body gave an ultimatum to the Nigerian junta to restore civilian rule/

General Tchiani Abdouramane took over power on July 26, 2023, by leading presidential guards to capture President Mohamed Bazoum.

ECOWAS said it was unconstitutional and called for a return to civilian rule, else, it will intervene with the military.

But threats by Mali and Burkina Faso, to leave ECOWAS and form a bloc with Niger has watered down the ECOWAS military action.

Nigeria’s Senate also rejected an appeal by President Tinubu to use the Nigerian army against Niger.

ECOWAS has also confirmed reports that an AU, UN, and ECOWAS mission to Niger was rejected by the military junta.
