Ebolowa:Meyo-Ville integrated health center becomes scary jungle.
The Meyo-Ville Integrated Health Center in Ebolowa 1 subdivision, South region of Cameroon has been abandoned in ruins. Surrounded by tall grasses, the beautiful looking health facility meant for the population is now a breeding ground to wild vegetation that is colonizing the entire unit.
Apart from this, the perforated roofs expose the wards to inundation whenever it rains and harsh sunshine during the day. Lack of equipment and materials like beds and good mattresses, lack of medicines in the pharmacy, electricity, water and other needs all combined have scared away the local population who prefer to suffer or treat themselves home or elsewhere than coming to the center to aggravate their condition.
“This hospital lacks everything. Look at the torn mattresses, which patient will want be hospitalized on it.? They only come here for consultation.” The lone state registered nurse, Martinie encounter at the center explained.
If the degrading state of the health facility scared away patients, majority of the medical staff stopped coming because of no visiting patients on a daily basis.
” We hardly have a patient here. Even if one comes, we will only consult and if it’s at night we consult using torch light of our mobile phones and refer him to another hospital in town.” Revealed the nurse.
A call for concern has been directed to health authorities in the South region as well as the Ebolowa 1 municipal authorities. Despite some visits effectuated by local authorities to evaluate the degree of work to be carried out, no form of renovation has been done.
“The Mayor said he will do something. Experts came about three times to evaluate the degrading building . We are still waiting desperately. If nothing is done we will mourn this beautiful looking structure being ruined by physical and environmental factors.” Added Martinie.
Apart from working in the midst of these challenging conditions, the personnel of this health structure taken care of by the Ebolowa 1 Council, evoke at least 12 months unpaid salaries owed them.
