Douala: woman accused of child abuse commits suicide
A woman whose name CNA got as Annabelle Suh, a part time teacher in a private secondary school in Douala, has died after consuming rat poison.
Inhabitants of the Bonamoussadi neighborhood, where she was a resident, say they found her battling with herself in her room and begging for mercy:
“I am not a bad person. Please forgive me,” a neighbour attests she said. A plea not welcomed by all neighbours who shamed her.
She reportedly drank rat poison after packing her bags:
“It seems she planned her death as everything was well packed in her room and the children were in school… When we opened the door, we saw her agonizing on the floor, begging to be accepted amongst all,” Etienne Noubissi head of the Bonamoussadi plateau block explains.
The lady in her 40s was accused of maltreatmenting her three nephews- her brother’s kids who were under her custody. Neighbours say she used to beat them late at night leaving them with teeth scars on their bodies and starving them some times.
All attempts to save the children in the past months turned futile as she was taken to the Akwa Nord brigade twice and released on grounds that it was a family affair.
Some family members say she had been a victim of depression.
