Douala: Two suspected pick-pockets, beaten to near-death

Two men on board a motorbike, suspected of snatching a lady’s handbag along the road in the Bonaberi, Douala IV subdivision-Wouri were beaten to near death by the mob on October 26, 2023.

Both men were chased and apprehended at Ngwelle.

One of the victims, the bike rider pleaded innocent, saying he was just a victim of circumstances.

“I am a commercial motorbike rider, transporting this man from the Grand Hanga to Rail. He refused I carry another passenger, promising to double the fair. While on the way, he pulled the handbag of a lady standing by the roadside without my knowledge. I only heard people shouting ‘Thieves, thieves’. The man told me to keep going which I did. We got blocked at this swampy place and the mob caught beat us mercilessly.” Zeh, the bike rider explained.

Their lives were saved by some security men who took them away.

An inhabitant in Ngwelle said, “They are very lucky the population is peaceful. Had it been in another quarter, they would have been burnt to death.”

It was also revealed that a security guard was attacked and killed at his duty post the previous week by bandits. Due to this, the inhabitants begged a vigilante committee be created to ensure the security of the population and their properties.
