Douala: two die after eating groundnut soup
12-year-old Gertrude Clara and her brother Andre Celestine, 5, are dead following alleged food poisoning.
A bowl of rice and groundnut soup given by a neighbour at their New Bell residence in Douala, was consumed by four members of the Mbong family, including the deceased children’s mother and a cousin but unfortunately, Clara and Andre did not survive.
Tawei Francoise, older sister to the deceased, said it was not the first time the neighbour was giving them food:
“She has always been giving us food. So we didn’t see any reason to be suspicious”.
“My mum, a cousin, my younger brother and sister all ate the food. When my cousin arrived her house, she called my mum and complained that she had been going to the toilet frequently and equally vomiting,” Francoise disclosed.
“Our mother thought it was just something mild. Few minutes later, the children at home started manifesting the same symptoms but before they could arrive the hospital, both of them gave up the ghost”.
No similar health complications have been reported on the part of the implicated neigbour and her sister who gave the food. They are in police custody for questioning.
