Douala soon to have ultra modern market
The market, according to the Minister of decentralization and local development, will be created between the Douala III and V municipalities and will occupy a surface area of 59 hectares. George Elanga Obam was speaking during the 6th session of steering and monitoring committee of the Douala ultra modern market construction project meeting which was held in Yaounde on February 26, 2023.
George Elanga Obam says the military engineering team called to execute the project is ready to install its machinery at the construction site in the coming days. The minister says this market will not only serve the Douala people but also the nation at large.
The market will comprise shades, wholesale and retail business centres, restaurants, check points and cattle markets. This meeting session in Yaounde was aimed at examining the architecture and technicalities needed to start the market project. The project is estimated at F CFA 1.8 billion.
“I am aware of the fact that, a project as huge as what is about to start will render so many people homeless and fustrated as their houses will be destroyed. I am promising to compensate all those who will be victims of the demolition exercise around the area of the market project construction and I will equally plead that those who live around the Douala III and V municipalities start getting ready and making plans on how to relocate so they are not taken unaware,” Minister George Elanga Obam said.
“I keep hearing of Douala having the highest and biggest market and I get excited. If this project can really become a success we will be so much grateful. This will boost the economy and we will be able to have successful businesses with more money to feed our families. Cameroon itself has become so difficult and if the government can be opening new structures like markets and other sites, we will hardly run short of livelihood,” John Michael Tchoumo an inhabitant of the municipality beamed.
The committee in charge of this project say everything is set and ready and Douala will have one of the biggest markets in Cameroon in no time.
