Douala residents fear for safety as Ravines threaten homes, roads
Douala, Cameroon (CNA)– Residents of Bloc Bordeau in Douala’s Cité des Palmiers neighborhood are living in fear due to three rapidly eroding ravines threatening their homes and a vital access road.
The Ravines have reportedly existed for a decade but have grown significantly larger due to seasonal rains. Residents claim they have notified municipal authorities but received no response or action plan.
“These ravines are a constant threat,” stated the head of Bloc Bordeau. “We fear for our lives and our property collapsing if the erosion continues.”
One of the ravines is dangerously close to a road leading to Ndogbong in the Douala 5 subdivision. This has become a hazard for both pedestrians and motorbike riders who use the route.
“It’s a terrifying situation,” commented a commercial motorbike rider using the road. “We risk falling into the ravine, and it’s too dangerous for passengers to cross by bike.”
The community is urging city council officials to take immediate action and address the ravines before they cause a catastrophe. Their primary concern is for the safety of residents before the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year begins.
