Douala: Real life ‘jaws’ as giant Alligator snatches man alive

Zemmanou Emmanuel, a man in his 50s, has been killed by a giant alligator in the Song Mbape neighborhood of Japoma village, Douala 3 Subdivision.
The tragedy occurred around 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 7 while Zemmanou, who lived nearby, was bathing in the river after a day of work at his quarry where he dug sand.
Witnesses reported that he was unexpectedly attacked by the alligator, which dragged him into the depths of the river. “Cries for help were heard. ‘An alligator is taking me away!’” recounted Charles Dissake, a resident of the Song Mbape neighborhood “By the time people arrived about 10 minutes later, the alligator had already pulled him away to the other side” He added.
Workers from the quarry searched in vain for Zemmanou’s remains the following morning. The quarter head of Song Mbape neighborhood , Dieudonné Paul Patrick Mbouma noted that such deadly attacks are not new in the area, with the animal’s method of attack being consistent.
“What is happening now has plunged the whole village into grief. This is at least the fourth victim. Just a week ago, we lost a young boy between 20 and 24 years old under similar circumstances. This makes us believe that the cayman is not far from us; it lives among us” he said.
The alligator has become a terror for the villagers who plan to meet with local authorities on Monday, February 10, to address the ongoing threat.
