Douala: Governor Diboua makes a balance sheet of security situation
The Governor of the Littoral region, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua has reviewed and modified some of the security measures taken last December 14, 2022 to fight against a group of gangsters popularly known as “microbes” who have been making life unbearable for inhabitants of the economic capital.
One of the measures which wa staken is the ban on the circulation of commercial motor bikes from 8pm to 6am. This ban had a negative impact on the economy as many trade unions and owners of bars complained.
In another press briefing organized on Monday December 19, the Governor announced he is slightly modifying this decision.Motocycles will now benefit an extra 4 hours of circulation and the curfew will now be from midnight to 6am.
“From midnight to 6am because many peaceful citizens cannot be concentrated on their businesses at this time,” said Governor Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua.
He says since the December 14 decision, 238 bikes have been seized in the Douala I municipality among which 150 have been impounded and 88 are currently at the gendarmerie and police stations.
In Douala II, 150 bikes have been seized, while in Douala III, 233 have been seized and 7 administrative detention requests have been filed to the Senior Divisional Officer for Wouri. In Douala IV and V, 258 and 401 bikes have been respectively confiscated and taken to their municipal pounds while some are being detained at gendarmerie stations.
It therefore means a total of 1,280 bikes have been seized in just less than a week since the circulation ban went into effect according to the Governor.
“Globally, the respect of the measure banning bike circulation from 8pm to 6am was effective despite the presence of some recalcitrants” he added.
He estimates the rate at which the measure was respected at over 80%.
Bar owners have also been informed that the decision concerning their time of closing will be reviewed progressively.
