Douala: Gendarmes seize non-biodegradable plastics
Elements of the Youpwe gendarmerie post in Douala have confiscated 9 big packets contaning 93000 non biodegradable plastic bags and 8 bottles of illicit whisky of the 8PM brand.
The goods were seized during an operation on July 25 in Youpwe, as the traders: a woman and her driver were preparing to introduce the plastics into the market. Both suspects will be presented to a judge at the Bonanjo Court of first instance in the coming days.
Since 2012, the Cameroon government has been fighting against the commercialisation and use of non biodegradable plastics. In 2021, Cameroon customs destroyed 42 tons of non biodegradable plastic bags.
Ten years after the then minister of environment Helé Pierre launched the war, non biodegradable plastics are still flooding the markets and the said plastic bags are now sold in several supermarkets
