Douala: DCC demolition leaves many businesses in peril
Scores of people are now without a source of livelihood following the demolition of their shops and business kiosks by Douala City Council (DCC) agents on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Entrée Lycée Village, in the Douala 3 subdivision without prior notification.
Some qualified the act as inhumane to people who strive for survival on a daily basis in a difficult Cameroonian economy.
“When they do this, how do they expect us to live, feed our families, and provide the basic needs of children? What are we going to eat now,” questioned a trader, a victim of the demolition.
Others say they arrived in the morning and only saw how their shops and kiosks were being leveled over baseless reasons.
“They told us they were destroyed because the shops and kiosks were dirty. Even at that, why not inform us? Again only our shops have been destroyed. There are other shops around which are dirty too. Why not demolish them too? This is injustice.” A trader decried.
“What will I live on my brother? They failed to orientate us, when we struggled to look for a position ourselves, they came demolishing.” Another victim informed.
The exercise according to officials of the Douala city council falls within its Douala Clean City operation and its assignment to fight against urban disorder.
