Douala: Administrative ,municipal authorities slaughter stray sheep as final warning to stubborn herders

Administrative and municipal authorities in Douala have proceeded with the killing of five out of 16 sheep at the municipal pound where were gathered from Bonaprizo, New Bell and other vicinities around the economic capital.

These sheep were caught moving astray despite warnings from the governor of the Littoral region, and the Douala City Council mayor.

“The governor and city mayor had warned severally against allowing animals to be loitering around the city but this appeared to have fallen on deaf ears. Reason why these sheep were caught and kept here. The killing is to create awareness to stubborn herders and it is just an inch of what is still to be done. The governor and city mayor are determined to keep Douala clean via the operation, Douala clean city”. Explained Victoire Kangue, Communication officer at the Douala City Council.

The mutton will be shared to inmates at the Douala central prison and orphans.

The 11 others spared coupled with other stray ones yet to be caught shall only escape death if their herders show up for their freedom upon presentation of ownership proofs.

“This is the final awareness message we are sending to owners of sheep, goats and cows. Any sheep caught moving astray from this May 15, 2024 shall be subjected to slaughter.” Victoire Kangue stressed.

No duration has been given as deadline for justification and collection. The types of proofs were not indicated, but the council agents pledged to be systematic and careful not to dash the goats to thieves.

Identified owners will pay a penalty of 25,000 frs before any collection. Anyone who comes days after May 15, will multiply the number of days by 5000 frs and pay the total sum as upkeep dues per sheep.

“We cannot spend to feed the sheep and the owners collect for free. Everyday is 5000frs per sheep. 10.000 frs for those with two and the multiplication continues”. Added Victoire Kangue.

Once these sums are paid, only then will the sheep be released.
