Crisis Group Warns of Unrest Ahead of Cameroon’s Presidential Election

A new report from the International Crisis Group warns that Cameroon faces significant risks of political instability in the run-up to its October presidential election. The report cites multiple crises, including the 42-year presidency of Paul Biya, 92, and the lack of a clear succession plan, as key drivers of tension.

The Brussels-based organization, an independent body focused on conflict resolution, highlights the potential for widespread unrest. The report notes that voting could be severely disrupted in the country’s restive Anglophone regions, where separatists have vowed to obstruct the poll, potentially disenfranchising thousands. Similar security threats from jihadist groups exist in the Far North.

The Crisis Group also points to a flawed electoral system, the government’s repression of political opposition and civil society, and rising ethnic rhetoric as major threats to a peaceful vote. To avert a crisis, the report urges Cameroonian leaders to prepare for the post-Biya era, release jailed activists, and consider a temporary electoral ceasefire with Anglophone separatists to ensure the safety and participation of voters.
