Confirmed: Bamenda inhabitants to enter 2026 with same poor roads

Inhabitants of Bamenda and road users will have to wait until 2026 to start using good roads in the city. This is because rehabilitation works may only start on the Bamenda urban crossing late this year or early in 2026.
The information was confirmed on Tuesday, June 17, 202,5, by the North West Regional Delegate of Public Works, Ngwainbi Paul. It was during a meeting to launch compensation for victims, whose properties will be destroyed in the course of the road construction.
In an interview with the press, the Regional Delegate said work might only start late this year, after all the victims have been compensated.
“Immediately after the compensation, we’re going to start work. We’re going to make sure that all the victims will be compensated according to their properties. They’re going to receive the required cheques for their money,” Ngwainbi Paul said.
“We don’t want to say we’re going to do it for three or four months…but work will start before the end of this year. As soon as we start going out of the rainy season by October or November, the contractor will start work,” Ngwainbi added.
During the meeting, it was revealed that 193 victims have been identified and will be compensated according to their properties.
The Bamenda urban crossing starts from Amour Mezam to Finance Junction, Veterinary Junction, T-Junction, Hospital Roundabout, Food Market, City Chemist Roundabout, and Veterinary Junction. The 6.5km stretch will be widened from 17 metres to 30 metres, as approved by the World Bank.
The 30 billion FCFA project, sponsored by the World Bank, was announced on June 19, 2024, by the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi. However, one year later, the population will still have to wait.
