Cholera cases in Nylon district hospital above 500

The Nylon District Hospital in Douala, Littoral region, is now considered one of the health facilities in Cameroon with the greatest number of cholera cases. Over 500 patients have been recorded so far:

“The Nylon District Hospital registered its first cholera case on January 4 2022. As days passed, the number gradually increased and even multiplied. Within a period of eight months, we are now above 500 cases.” Dr TSOALA Verlain in charge of cholera cases at the Nylon District Hospital said.

This health unit received its first case of cholera in January and immediately made six beds available in case of arrival of other patients:

“We didn’t expect this large number of cholera cases in a very short while. However, we were compelled to add the beds. We didn’t only end at that but were obliged to expand the isolation and cholera treatment unit.” Added Dr. TSOALA Verlain.

According to the medic, the increase in cholera cases in the Littoral region particularly in Douala has poor hygiene and sanitation, refusal to get vaccinated to prevent cholera and above all negligence as roots.

Health personnel at the Nylon District Hospital Douala have re-emphasized the need to take precautions in order to avoid being contaminated:

“The best ways to avoid cholera are to get the cholera vaccines which are available in every health district, adopt good hygiene and sanitation behavior, wash hands regularly before eating, wash fruits and treat water before consumption. With these, at least your risk of contamination are slimy.” Dr TSOALA Verlain advised.

Relatives of cholera patients hospitalized in the isolation unit of the Nylon District Hospital Douala have on their part been implored to facilitate the works of the health personnel handling the patients by respecting the restriction and not hanging around the isolated persons until their treatment.
