Two persons have lost their lives the morning of July 17, at the entrance to the Buea Great Soppo Market as a private car on speed dashed at them.
Reports say the speedy vehicle missed track and violently hit a tricycle offloading tomatoes before proceeding to those nearby. Seven persons severely injured are said to have been taken to the Buea Regional Hospital.
An eyewitness of the incidence, a Council police agent narrates that the private vehicle was from the direction of Molyko before crossing the opposite lane to hit the tricycle.
The witness says the car ran over a couple of people before finally being caught by some road side trees around the market.
The three members of the car were found alive though needing medical attention.
At the time of this report, Police Officers from the mobile intervention unit were at the spot evaluating the situation.
The Mayor of Buea, Barrister David Mafani Namange, said it is a tragic day in Buea “It is a very unfortunate incident because this accident has taken two lives and we have come to the hospital and there are four people in the hospital here. It could have been worse if it did not happen that early.”
He advised drivers to be prudent when they are behind the wheel, ” Lessons we are learning from is one; we should try to be prudent when on the steering. Another thing is that we respect the norms of governance in the city. Two weeks ago I pleaded with the vendors to leave and go to the central market because of the risk of being involved in an accident. I remember reminding one of them who said that would reduce their sales that it is better to see them alive than dead with money in their accounts. Last week we did a seizure of things and the people went back. This time we are going to be harder on the implementation of the measures. We pray that those in the hospital are stabilized.”
