CAMWATER workers threaten to go on strike
Workers of the Cameroon water supply company, CAMWATER, have said government has until September 30th 2022 to respond favourably to their demands or be ready to bear the consequences of ignoring their plight.
It is via a communique that the trade union of CAMWATER workers explained what they say the have been going through for a good number of years now.
According to the workers, President Paul Biya had ordered that the amount of F CFA 10 billion be made available to them for better care of personnel on February 9 2018 but they are yet to see any of that money four years down the road. In spite of several meetings organized to talk about this issue, the said money remains invisible. The trade union representatives say their most recent disappointment was recorded last September 7th 2022 when the minister of finance cancelled a scheduled meeting with him 30 minutes to time after delegates had travelled from other regions to be part of discussions.
Another point of discontent is the fact that workers in the electricity supply sector got the sum of F CFA 180 billion promised by the head of state but CAMWATER on the other hand, which had over ten times less allocated to them, has not seen a single franc fours years after the decision was taken and signed.
The trade union representatives have thus decided that a strike action will be embarked on come October 1 2022 if nothing is done to remedy the situation by September 30th.
