Camwater: 4 directors general in 17 year, same plights

Moussa Blaise is the new man at the head of the Cameroon water utilities corporation (Camwater). His appointment on September 30 2022, brings to four, the number of men who have headed the enterprise since its creation in 2005.

Ever since it went functional, Camwater has been unable to make available good quality water in constant supply in the country. Access to portable water in the political and economic cities of the country is still a dream. In Yaounde, despite an- 8-day deadline given by the minister of water and energy to Camwater to resolve the water shortage early September 2022, the population is still waiting:

“We can barely use water from taps. It has a urine colour. It is mainly used for cleaning. We pay monthly bills but have to beg for water from borehole owners… This is terrible. In this 21st century” Martina, living in Santa Barbara, Yaounde laments.

In Douala, the scenario is same as George a landlord tells us:

“Ever since I built my house, I installed borehole facilities because I did not want to suffer the water shortage… In my house, I do not bother taking water from Camwater. Of what need would it be?”

Adding to the water crisis, Moussa Blaise, the new Camwater boss, will have to calm in-house tension as workers of Camwater announced a strike on October 1 2022 if management does not improve on their working conditions. He equally has to ensure water given to the people is properly treated and has to clear the company of the illegal financial transactions plaguing it.

Camwater has moved from Basile Atanga Kouna(2006-2012), Jean Williams Sollo(2012-2016), Alphonse Roger Ondoa Akoa(2016-2017), Gervais Bolenga(2017-2022) and now Blaise Moussa (2022-…).

Blaise Moussa before his ascension to the helm of Camwater was Secretary General at Fecafoot (2015-2017) during the Tombi A Roko Sidiki reign. He equally worked at the newly created national mines enterprise (SONAMINES) and the taxation office.
