Cameroon to boost use of ICT in agricultural sector

By Nambu Bernadette Franka

Cameroon’s government is seeking to boost the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in informal sectors especially agriculture.

Posts and telecommunications boss, Minette Libom Li Likeng made the announcement on August 23.

According to Minister Li Likeng, the project for the acceleration of the digital transformation of Cameroon will boost the use of ICTs in sectors where it was previously not conceivable such as in agriculture.

“We are going to showcase that ICTs can improve sectors that no one can ever imagine. That is why the choice was to start with agriculture. In a few months, you will see that those people who looked abandoned in rural areas will master ICTs, sell their goods and improve on their productivity,” the minister said.

“We are going to put in place some platforms, train people who are already involved in ICTs and make them understand that ICTs are very powerful tools,” she added.

On his part, the National Coordinator of the Project for the Acceleration of the Digital Transformation of Cameroon, (PATNuC), Dr Winfred Fuaye Mfuh, presented what the project aims to achieve: “We want to ensure that all small producers are able to use technology to improve on their productivity, access market as well as to develop themselves. By the end, we would have extended telecommunications to all rural areas in Cameroon that are not yet covered.”
