Cameroon defence ministry says human rights watch lied

In a release dated August 24 2022, the ministry of defence via its spokesperson Atongfack Cyrille, has termed the recent reports of Human Rights Watch (HRW) on incidents that occured in Ndop, Belo, Chomba and Missong in the North West region of Cameroon as outrageously provocative.

HRW in its August 11th report, declared that between April 24 and June 12 2022, defence and security forces destroyed 12 houses and health centers in Chomba, executed 10 civilians, carried arbitrary arrests of some 26 people and caused the disappearance of 17 others in Ndop thereby violating human rights.

Colonel Cyrille Serge Atonfack has now said these allegations are “grotesque and ludicrous” adding that procedures emanating from administrative and judicial investigations are ongoing in accordance with laws and regulations in force.

Human rights watch is still accusing government of maintaining impunity towards military men who allegedly committed abuses in the two restive English speaking regions but navy Captain Cyrille Serge Atonfack has reassured that the military remains unperturbed as they carry on with their operations in securing the population and re-emphasized that misconducts are always sanctioned.
