Cameroon: Cancer patients double in 10 years
Medics at the Laquintinie hospital in Douala say liver, cervical, ovarian and prostate cancer are the most frequent cancers they diagnose.
Between 2010-2012 and 2020-2021, Professor Jean Paul Engbang, an oncologist at the Laquintinie hospital says cancer patients have doubled with majority being youths. The medical facility is hosting a 16year old suffering from breast cancer which normally affects persons aged 46 and above.
Ovarian cancer, considered one of the deadliest forms of cancer affecting women is very often diagnosed at the 3rd or 4th stage making treatment impossible whereas, this form of cancer can be treated if diagnosed early.
Medical practitioners fear the number of cancer patients might triple in coming years if persons do not observe a healthy life and go for early diagnosis.
