CAF to ameliorate refereeing of African football

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Dr. Patrice Motsepe has assured they will review and ameliorate football arbitration on the continent.

He was talking during an interview while on a visit to Algeria where he is to evaluate the progress of preparations of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) to be organized from January 13 to February 4, 2023. “I have heard a lot of criticism about African refereeing and this issue will be reviewed shortly. The transparency and credibility of each referee will be studied. The superiority of a nation must be measured by the performance of its results, not by arbitration faults” he said.

“We agreed with FIFA to improve African refereeing and we will do everything to make it more credible and fair” Dr. Patrice Motsepe added.

It should be recalled that the Fennecs of Algeria had complained to the arbitration committee about Gambian referee, Bakary Gassama after their world cup qualifier game against Cameroon. Algerian coach, Djamel Belmadi accused the Gambian referee of having precipitated the elimination of his team on the way to Qatar 2022. Ruling on the case ended in favour of Bakary Gassama after the match had been thoroughly reviewed.
