Business persons saddened as Douala IV Mayor destroys roadside shops
Several business persons in the Douala IV municipality are stranded following the destruction of their sales booths which were situated along the public road.
An exercise carried out by the Douala IV Council Mayor, Dr. Edouard Moby Mpah in an operation geared at putting an to urban disorder in the municipality:
“We all want to live in a clean and organized municipality. This exercise will allow the council to install containers in a more orderly manner and anyone wishing to market their goods can occupy” explained Mayor Edouard Moby Mpah.
Though the initiative seems interesting, the stranded traders complain that not long ago, the council had asked them to pay huge sums of money for the temporal occupation of the roadside for their businesses. They say forcefully removing them now is morally wrong:
“When the council agents came they compelled us to pay a one-year occupation fee and we complied. Little did we know they would come back to kick us away and destroy our kiosks. They should have informed us of the destruction exercise months before and we would have found somewhere else to settle. Right now we are stranded and confused. Where do we go to from here and how are we going to put food on the table? They took us unaware!” an affected business woman explains.
Some of the victims who are internally displaced persons from the North West and South West regions say they suffered to establish a small business to sustain their families but are today being pushed back into the suffering pit. They plead for consideration noting that the specified containers to be installed by the Douala IV are too expensive.
