Buea: flood victims begin cleaning operations

More than 15 persons have been left homeless and at least two children are in hospital receiving treatment for severe injury foloowing the flood which hit Buea in the South West region of Cameroon on March 18 2023.

The children’s names have been given as Chris and Warren and medical personnel have so far said years of age, was not so lucky when their Bonalyonga village home was hit.

“Irene and her siblings were sleeping and I was in the kitchen with my son when I saw from a distance water coming down from the mountain with heavy stones. I immediately screamed and tried waking all the kids up and was struggling to send them out through the window but Irene could not make it. She held the roof with all her strength and before I could get to her, the water took her away,” Ambatah Larisa a victim and a neighbor recounts.

Neighbors say Irene’s mother is currently unaware of her death.

The neighborhoods of Lycee molyko,Buea town Bonalyonga street, the area around the Synod office building of the PCC and other neighborhoods in Buea were hit by floods after a heavy downpour and many were trapped under the rubbles. The exact number of dead people is still unknown but at least two have so far been confirmed.

The victims are now asking for public and government assistance. Meanwhile, the affected areas are now being cleaned by victims and workers of the Buea councul, who are using caterpillars to dig out the stones.
