Bridge of Unity: Cameroon’s Far North region backs president Biya’s potential candidacy

As Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute inaugurated the Bongor-Yagoua Cross-Border Bridge, militants from the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) and key voices from the Far North region expressed their desire for President Paul Biya to seek another mandate.
The bridge, hailed as a “bridge of friendship and brotherhood” by Chadian Prime Minister Allah Maye Halina, is expected to enhance circulation between Cameroon and Chad.
During the Prime Minister’s visit, the consistent message from the Far North region was a call for President Biya to present his candidacy in the forthcoming presidential election. This backing joins others across the country, urging the President to run for office again.
The 620-meter bridge aims to strengthen cultural ties between communities on both sides of the River Logone, which has claimed countless lives due to dangerous canoe crossings. According to Prime Minister Halina, “The bridge will strengthen cultural ties between communities on both sides of the river.”
Prime Minister Dion Ngute highlighted the bridge as a symbol of enhanced Cameroon-Chad relations, announcing upcoming projects, including a railway extension and electricity network connecting both countries. He also mentioned “The bridge project includes improvements to hospital infrastructure, youth entrepreneurship initiatives, and a joint frontier control post.”
This bridge is the second to connect the two countries, following the Ngueli Bridge in Kousseri, which has improved movement between them.
