Breaking: Indomitable Lions head coach Marc Brys quits

The head coach of the Indomitable Lions, Marc Brys, has notified the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, he has terminated the contract he signed with the Cameroon government on April 8, 2024, as head coach of the Indomitable Lions.
A letter sent to the sports minister Narcisse Moelle Kombi, dated July 21, 2025, indicates that the decision is prompted by non-payment of salary.
Marc Brys said he and his collaborators have waited for over 60 days. “To date, despite several months of fulfilling my duties, no payment has been made as stipulated by article 6, line 7 of the contract, which says the salary has to be paid latest the 8th of each month” the tactician pointed out.
“This situation constitutes a big failure on the part of the administration, clearly observed as a legitimate reason to end the contract” he added.
This comes as a surprise to the public following the cooperation the two parties seemed to have shared, especially with the tense atmosphere that existed from the time the Belgian was announced on April 2, 2024. The Cameroon Football Federation did not immediately recognize his appointment by the sports ministry.
Marc Brys had openly said he would only listen to what the government (his employers) say. He defied instructions given by the Cameroon Football Federation on several occasions.
On the day he first met with FECAFOOT President, Samuel Eto’o, at the federation’s head quarters in Tsinga, Yaounde, there was a heated altercation between the two personalities. Eto’o insisted FECAFOOT is the sole institution recognised by FIFA to take action on issues regarding football in Cameroon.
According to FECAFOOT, the government unilaterally selected Marc Brys. The state representatives have used a 2015 agreement signed with the federation to back their actions. Concerned about the interference of the government in the country’s football affairs, FIFA urged the stakeholders to amend the agreement, which is yet to be reviewed.
Marc Brys has has asked the sports ministry to make his outstanding payments with “immediate effect” before the issue gets to court. The Cameroon Football Federation has also reacted, indicating that a response is being sought to ensure that it does not affect Cameroon’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification fixtures and the Morocco AFCON scheduled to kick off in December.
