Bread considered expensive confiscated by authorities in Koutaba

Like the proverbial 2.000 loaves in the Bible, a similar quantity of bread have been seized by local authorities in the Noun division, West region of Cameroon. The bread was taken from suppliers who were about distributing them to vendors in the town of Koutaba and other localities around.

According to the authorities, a loaf of this confiscated bread weighs 105g, which is far below the regulated 160g weight recommended for the amount of F CFA 125 per loaf. They consider this as gross consumer exploitation. This cost has generated series of tensions in Foumbot,  Foumban, and Koutaba in the past days with bakeries choosing to close down due to threats of fire from the angry population.

The Divisional Officer for Koutaba, Bertrand TA who personally weighed a loaf of the seized stock said the bread weighing 105 g had to be sold at F CFA 75 or 50 but the population is forced to buy for the amount of F CFA 125.

This seizure comes at a moment when the population of the Noun Division are protesting against the crazy hike in the prices of basic commodities and other products on the local market making life difficult.
